Over the years there have been several changes in the
style, craftsmanship, tools and woods used for furniture.
Most early furniture styles were deeply influenced by styles
in England. In spite of this influence furniture in
the United States took on the interpretation of U.S. craftsmen
and were produced in woods that were available here in the
United States. Country cabinet makers made furniture
from pine, poplar, cherry and walnut - woods available in
their local areas.
In the cities cabinet makers had other woods available
such as Mahogany and Rosewood as well as newer tools which
gave them the ability to produce furniture more closely
resembling that produced in England. Country cabinet
makers produced furniture that was utilitarian, while city
cabinet makers were more able to produce furniture that
was not only functional, but also stylish.
